Welcome to the DMCIMUN 2020 Security Council! The United Nations Security Council is one of the most important organs of the United Nations. The council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security across the globe. The council consists of 15 countries, five of which are permanent members, and ten who are elected for two-year terms.
The Security Council will have two separate committees, one for novices and one for advanced delegates.
1. Crisis in Venezuela Venezuela has been experiencing a political and socio-economic crisis for the past decade. The government, under Nicolas Maduro, proclaims that this crisis has been brought on by international forces, but many Venezuelans, including opposition party leader Juan Guaido, believe otherwise. Problems such as government corruption, poor maintenance of oil production, and costly social programs plague the nation, and have all helped contribute to the unfolding crisis. Nations must come together and find solutions to help resolve the crisis and bring prosperity back into the lives of innocent Venezuelans. 2. Crisis in Libya The crisis in Libya has split the country into small, dangerous terfs. In 2011, the citizens of Libya rose up against dictator Gaddafi, which soon escalated into an all out civil war. The North American Treaty Organization, also known as NATO, stepped in by providing aid to rebel militia groups, which led to the killing of dictator Gaddafi. This left Libya subject to increased attacks, raids, and general violence. Citizens have been forced to submit to rebel militia, who continue to fight for control over land and resources. Action must be taken to unite Libya and end the crisis once and for all. 3. Small Arms Trafficking The issue of national security is one that every country faces. Most militia make use of small arms, which includes firearms that are transportable, lightweight, and easy to carry. There is nothing illicit about the use of these weapons, and they are widely used for defense all around the world, but small arms can be acquired illegally and misused in conflicts. The illegal dealing of small arms can cause great detriment to innocent citizens all around the world, and the issue on how to stop trafficking must be addressed.
