Welcome to the DMCIMUN 2020 Group of 20 Committee!
The Group of Twenty, or the G20, is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. The G20 brings together the leaders of both developed and developing countries from every continent. Collectively, G20 members represent around 80% of the world’s economic output, two-thirds of global population and three-quarters of international trade. Throughout the year, representatives from G20 countries gather to discuss financial and socioeconomic issues. Since its founding in 1999, the G20 agenda has grown to address a multitude of topics that go far beyond economics, including war, government, and the environment.
1. Women's Economic Empowerment One of the longest-standing issues on the world stage since the creation of international organizations has been the equity and rights of women. While serious strides have been made over the past decades, the economic disadvantages that women face remain a pressing issue. Barriers such as restrictive legislation, negative social attitudes, and poor access to education mean that around the world, women still receive fewer opportunities than men for economic advancement and independence, especially in the STEM fields. As the most economically powerful twenty nations in the world, the G20 must look towards solving this issue and creating a more socially and economically equitable future.
2. Sanctions & Trade As the world becomes increasingly connected through economic and social factors, the effects that sanctions have on the global economy are becoming increasingly serious. Issues such as the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine have prompted various nations to impose harsh sanctions, which have had disastrous economic and social effects on the involved populations and have negatively impacted the global economy. The role of sanctions in resolving disputes between countries has broadened over recent years, beyond traditional trade disputes. World leaders must assess the impact of sanctions and their effectiveness in achieving their desired impacts.
3. Concerns with Technological Advancements One of the biggest advancements in the 21st century is the dramatic growth in our knowledge and usage of technology. As the world continues to progress, technology continues to play an ever-growing role in our daily lives, and has now become integral to global economies and productivity. However, the advancement of technology has also given rise to new threats such as cyber terrorism and privacy concerns, which when exploited, can lead to harmful effects on a mass scale. The pros and cons associated with the growing advancement of technology is something all world leaders must consider.
